The criterion analysis takes advantage of the concept that, for each string, the function generates a tennporary array or database of each of the values recognised in the string. The user may therefore select or filter out only those values that he wishes to review in greater detail.

The analysis takes place in two phases

• identify the count (or number) of items in the array that match the criterion
  
• identify the array position for each member (Nth) of the count
  

The user would use the array position for each member of the series to extract individual details. The diagram below shows the count, position analysis and value for each of three potential matching items in the strings analysed.

Remarks

Where a match does not exist the ubiquitous error value -1 is returned.
